The Cancer Full Moon: The Real Feel?

If you are up at the mundane New year and the sky is clear, you will see a big fat Moon beaming down at you—and seeing everything that you do—believe it! The first Full Moon of 2018 occurs on January 1 @ 8:25 pm CST. According to the lunar laws, that puts the 2018 New Year celebration into the orb of a Full Moon. So…just a wee heads up…everything will be heightened, intensified and generally highlighted since a Full Moon tends to bring all sorts of things out from under the bushes. And since this Full Moon is a Cancer Full Moon, the home station of the Moon in astrological lingo, emotions especially will be ready to rise to the surface and crash upon the shores of your psyche! Be prepared.

It’s a potent energy grid this time around with 5 significant energies situated in Capricorn, a hard-hitting, get down to the basics sort of energy, along with 2 other significant energies situated in Scorpio, never an energy to shy away from the truth of all things. This alignment can lead to an intense need to truly understand what one is feeling and to then to devise solid and workable strategies to address any or all issues that may still be lurking around in the mind and heart. Not a bad idea for this turning of the wheel of the year. Auspicious that this combination of energies is occurring on the first day of the mundane New Year. If you have felt stuck about situations in your life, if you have felt frustrated that you could not shift things more easily, this Full Moon provides exactly the right kind of environment to, at the very least, think about taking action. It has often been said that strategy is the key to successful outcome. Capricorn is the consummate energy of strategy. Cancer is the heart that is needed to make any strategy work effectively. The Cancer Full Moon is a great time to examine the plans that we have been making and locate the heartfelt reasons that can ignite those plans into effective actions.

Mercury is now direct in Sagittarius though still not at the degree of retrograde so small glitches and interruptions of forward flowing energy can occur. In Sag, Mercury moves quickly so the retrograde period can feel like tripping over one’s own feet—or thoughts in this case! Any retrograde period will act according to the energy that it occurs in so its our job to balance that out as much as we can. When that impulse hits, just take a breath or two before plunging off the cliff. It seems easy enough but Sag energy is highly active, often overly impulsive and enthusiastic about it all. With the retrograde in effect, the tendency is to disregard the need to go over things twice—at least! Resist that tendency if at all possible.

Here are the coming years retrograde periods and the signs in which they occur:

March 22-April 15 (Aries)

July 26-August 18 (Leo)

November 16-December 6 (Scorpio & Sag)

Put these dates into your date-keepers with a few weeks before and after also marked so that you remember to pay more attention to details than you normally would.

Saturn is newly entered into Capricorn and with this advent begins a 2ish year period of his transit through that energy. Saturn return time for all of you who have Saturn in Capricorn, a time to put on your ‘big boy’ pants and get busy with organizing your life according to some reasonable rules of engagement. Make a plan, check it once or twice and get ready to work.

This Saturn, newly entered into Capricorn lends a gravity to this Full Moon. Life is a serious business, says he, and you have to start taking it seriously. With Mars conjoined to Jupiter in Scorpio and squaring the nodal axis, the call to action is to pursue the reward with passion. But first, figure out what that reward is. Consider what you love. It is that thing, the thing that you most revere, that defines who you are and how you act. Act well. Act decisively. But be truthful about it all. Scorpio energy, at the highest level, demands honesty, authenticity, so sit a bit with your deepest feelings during this Full Moon and allow them to demonstrate to you the fullness of your SELF.

Cancer energy, the energy of this Full Moon, nicely held by the boundaries of Capricorn is the ultimate expression of the heart. Cancers feels it and Capricorn manages the feeling of it. Together these energies can form a powerful force within our psyches, a force that can heal, that can soothe, that can shelter, that can shoulder the burdens of the grieving soul. Used properly it is the energy of the householder who serves through the action of responsible nurturing. Lovely.

So, be ready to feel the whole spectrum of emotional response but also be ready to examine those feelings and decide if they are really ones that come from deep within you. Remember, we are merely monkeys and as such, are really adept mimics.

Here we have the suggestion of the coming together of diverse elements to create a unique whole. We are encouraged to find common ground, not through sameness but rather through different-ness. Let us be nurtured by that which is alien to us so that it can become the thing that is in union with us. This is a hard concept to embrace in this time of polarization. The ego self seeks, yes, craves, the security of the known and yet it is the known that is the very thing that is preventing the collective from growing into something other than dispute, disagreement, discord and divisiveness. The promise is that if we can embrace the opposite, it will complete the circle of energy once and for all.

The answer, naturally, lies in the natural world around us. It is the very diversity of this organism—Gaia herself, that holds the ‘right’ solution to our ongoing struggle to find common ground. We do not have to be all the same. In fact, we have to be all different. So, while Capricorn makes the rules and regulations—and they are absolutely necessary!—Cancer says, ‘let’s apply them with love, with compassion, with fellow feeling, WITH HEART.

Thought for this Month:

I hold the boundaries of my heart in my loving arms

This last New Moon of the current year precedes the upcoming Winter Solstice by a few days so we have the opportunity to spend some real-time musing on the year past and laying down some real-time intentions for the year about to unfold.

Sag is such a hopeful energy, always reaching for the best possible goal under even dire circumstances. Its an energy we all need during these chaotic times when, it seems, that everyone is at war with everyone. At its highest possible manifestation, it is about the inclusiveness of diversity rather than the divisiveness of it. It is about seeing the divine in the foreignness (to us) of the other and allowing our own divinity to shine out through our eyes of acceptance and forgiveness. It is definitely something to aspire towards as we begin another spiral of the cycle of time with the Winter Solstice.

This New Moon is all about the power and certainty of right intention and right action. Mars, newly entered into Scorpio is zealous about seeking the most effective way to externalize the values on which we base our lives. Jupiter, also in Scorpio and squaring the nodal axis calls us to examine what we used to be and who we are becoming. An individual is the sum total of the values that rule his/her life. Every choice that we make flow from the values that define us. What are those values in our individual life? What do we love? What do we want? What do we fear losing? Think about it. It is who you are.

Saturn is poised to march with determination into his home sign of Capricorn and he bolsters this fiery New Moon @ 30* of Sag. This is, in astrological terms, a ‘critical degree’, meaning that it holds the significance of fullness. The search for truth, the bottom line, the reality of what is truly meaningful has now been well explored for the past 2-ish years. The group born between roughly November 1985- roughly November 1988 have more or less completed their first Saturn return, a definitive coming of age for them. Now it’s the turn of those born in the following 2-ish year period to begin that journey into the first great late ‘reality check’ of their young lives. Good luck, millennials! Life begins to look very different from the other side of this significant threshold in one’s self-actualization process. Its time now to actually implement some of the ideals that, hopefully, you have discovered in the last 30-ish experiential years.

This powerful Saturn, conjoined to this New Moon in Sag encourages us all to stand in our truth and make things new again. Sag is a young energy full of zest and appetite. How can we integrate this sense of ‘newness’ into our own lives? What can we be excited about, hopeful about? Anticipation is such an energizing element, isn’t it? Hopefully we can all anticipate something positive, something to look forward to rather than something to dread!

The Sabian Symbols for this New Moon are:

It’s time for a change, a change of form, a change of place, a change of who you are. The first symbol suggests that bringing something into form takes a long time and can be an arduous, laborious process. Its about finesse, skill, attention to detail and a clear idea of what the end result is, at least in your own mind. It hearkens back to that idea of personal values forming the individual that emerges after many, many choices made. Think about what makes you choose whatever it is that you choose from the least significant to the most significant. Then you will come to understand who you really are and why you really are. So, as you are shaped by the life you are living, take the time to shape that life as you live it.

In the second symbol we are reminded that perspective is altered by the environment that surround the person who is examining any given situation. When one is ‘in the forest’ things look a lot different that when one emerges from that forest. What about your life is the thing that you need to emerge from so that the ‘sculpting’ can take place? Sometimes we just simply need a change of scene in order to continue growing into the individuals that we desire ourselves to be. Of course, as we emerge from that forest of habitual routines, let us not forsake the valuable things that we have acquired along the way. Rather, lets find new ways of using the skills and assets that we have in our backpack!

I love New Moons! It is a wonderful reminder that no matter what the situation might be, there is always another opportunity to give it all another go. Let’s all of us sit down for a few moments in the next few days and resolve to fill the upcoming year full of love hope aspiration and fellow feeling. Go find someone with whom you totally disagree and give them a brotherly or sisterly kiss on both their cheeks as a sign of new things to come! Yes, that sounds good to me!

Full Moon in Gemini, December 3, 2017 @ 9:48 am CST

Here we go!

After the dark, deep waters of the Sun’s transit through Scorpio during the past month we have arrived in the fast-paced land of the centaur—Sagittarius. Fittingly, the first Full Moon finds itself in Gemini, an energy that stands squarely opposed to anything even remotely Scorpionic. This is all about the LIGHT.

Gemini is light in every sense of that word, emotionally, physically & mentally. Remember that Gemini’s time is just before the Summer Solstice when the natural world is alive with anticipation and growth. Emotionally, Gemini is loathe to dwell on the  negative but rather avidly seeks out those ‘god vibrations’. Mentally, this is about sampling and sipping rather than digesting and regurgitating. In its own way, Gemini gives us some fairy magic instead of the magic of the dark.

However, and this is the neatest part of looking at reality through the astrological lens, all may not be quite as it appears to be. For this Full Moon, Neptune, the planet of the mist extrordinaire, sits in exact square to the Sun/Moon at 12 * mutable, (Gemini/Sag squared by Pisces).

The suggestion with this thorny little interaction of energy is that some of those dark and secretive issues that you may have uncovered or tried to deal with, will sink back into the far reaches of your psyche either by intent or reflex reaction. Maybe it is just too much to swallow all at once and you decide that you have to give it a rest. Or, you may just simply decide to walk away from truth-telling. Neptunian energy can easily facilitate deception if not used with utmost consciousness. It is, after all, the energy of the consummate dreamer, the one who can re-imagine anything, anywhere and any which way.

On the other hand, if you rise to the challenge, you could easily discover how to integrate some of the less appealing things that you uncovered over the last few months into a better and more functional version of yourself. That’s the other side of Neptune, especially when he resides in Pisces, an aspiration to spirituality, to blessedness, to all that comes from the sweet part of the self.

Let’s go with that, shall we?

There are a few other things to keep in mind as this Full Moon lights up our night sky. Firstly, we move into a Mercury retrograde period at this moment in time! The little trickster was just about to step solidly into Capricorn but changed his mind (thanks, Gemini Full Moon) and will now move back into Sag until just after Winter Solstice. These periods can be frustrating if you are not prepared to cross your T’s and dot your I’s at every turn. Just be extra careful to PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS and before you know it, clarity will arrive…I hope.

Saturn is almost exactly conjunct Mercury at his station adding to the feeling of frustration and stuck-ness. Use the energy to recheck whatever you have been planning or working on. ‘Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat…’ so says the great general. Formulate strategy, plan it out and then implement.

Mars is just about to enter Scorpio in about a week. Once he enters his home sign (Mars is in his home domicile in both Aries and Scorpio), the energy of action and initiation will be let loose. This is an energy that is hungry for effective implementation of intention so get ready to move with it. Of course, any ingress or transit is modified by the psyche which perceives it so we will all act uniquely during this time period. Nevertheless, the next few months is a good time to get moving, get doing. I’m going to try it out!

The Sabian Symbols for this Full Moon are :

A topsy was an old-fashioned term for an indentured servant, usually black. If you feel enslaved to things that do not have the right to enslave you, if you feel hard done by, if you feel a need to be free, its up to you to step into emancipation. We are the masters of our life and it is the choices that we make that will either lead us into self-determination or further into entrapment. Face yourself. Find yourself. Free yourself. Then you will easily move into the opposing image, mythic, magical and energizing. On its own, a flag flying free in the wind is a beautiful sight but magically transformed into an eagle, a symbol of wisdom and insight, it becomes something mighty. It is victory over all that is attempting to defeat us. It is the pinnacle of an impossible mountain climb. It is hope and faith for better things to come. I can live with that.
